Candy cane hot chocolate

This rich hot chocolate goes from good to heck ya with the addition of a few key ingredients: smashed candy canes, vanilla and a pinch of salt. Salt has a way of always making chocolate taste, well, more chocolatey. The mixture starts in a saucepan with cocoa powder and chopped chocolate, and the whole mess gets whisked together with milk until warm and steamy.

Okay, ya, so I made this when it was still technically morning. But it's December and no one was looking except my toddler. I know you tell yourself these things too. You people get me.

Here's how I made it:
makes 3-4 servings

1/3 cup chopped milk or dark chocolate, or chocolate chips
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 cup smashed candy cane pieces
1/2 tsp vanilla
a pinch of salt
3 cups milk

I added the first five ingredients to a medium saucepan then whisked in the milk. I heated the mixture over medium-high heat until the chocolate and candy cane pieces were melted and the mixture was hot and steamy (but not boiling). That's it!

Rich. Simple. Homemade.
